What are the benefits of transverse ridging in potato cultivation?

Potato cultivation is increasingly extending into hilly regions. Rainfall here is between 700 and 850 mm, and the risk of erosion is correspondingly high. Transverse embankments without vegetation can usually withstand only 1 to 2 rainfalls and are then levelled and thus ineffective. Greened transverse embankments withstand until the potatoes are closed and thus represent the best erosion protection. Winter barley as greening seed (40 - 60 kg/ha) has proven to be the most resistant to metribuzin, better than oats and spring barley. A grass herbicide is usually needed to kill winter barley before row closure of potatoes.

With stable transverse ridges, the water absorption capacity of the soil is very much improved and thus yields are stabilised. Water distribution in the field also becomes more even because it no longer pools in depressions. This is particularly important on almost level fields, because here the water remains over a large area.

This not only has a positive influence on the trafficability (no more wet spots in the field) but also on the occurrence of late blight, wet rot, Erwinia, Rhizoctonia and thus also on the storage stability. I.e. even if there is no danger of erosion, cross dams contribute to risk reduction. During drought, the water parked on the spot has a direct effect on yield and quality.

The ripening potato now receives large amounts of nitrogen, sprouts, produces seedlings and new shoots.
